If you've owned a car long enough then you've may have had to replace it's battery. You should know that this isn't because of planned obsolescence at play, or anything sinister at all, it's just that car batteries last between 4 to 5 years and then need to be replaced. It's just the way it is with today's lead-acid battery technology. In this post, we will explain more about the battery in your Toyota and what you should know to keep it running in tip-top shape.

First, what does a battery do in a car?

The formal definition of a battery is "a device that translates chemical energy into electricity." Car batteries are composed of small chemical pockets called "cells" that store chemical energy and transform it into electrical energy when needed. What a battery does is store enough chemical/electrical energy in the cells to use to start your car.

So my car battery is just for starting my car?

Yes, allow us to explain. Non-hybrid cars have a single battery that mechanics refer to as an "SLI" battery. SLI stands for "starting, lighting, and ignition." This type of battery provides short bursts of power to start your engine, power your ignition, and then power up your lights and accessories. Here's the core concept: once the SLI battery jolts the engine to life, the power for the car is now supplied by the rotating alternator.

How do I know if my Toyota needs a new battery?

As we explained previously, after 4-5 years a new battery gets old and usually needs to be replaced. Here are a few symptoms to look for:

Delayed Engine Cranking - You may need a new battery if when you attempt to start the vehicle, it cranks over slowly. This is often especially true if it's cold outside.

Check Engine Light is on - You may need a new battery if your check engine light turns on when you are driving. Note that this symptom can be an old battery or a failure of your alternator.

Corrosion - Since car batteries are filled with acidic fluid, as they age they can leak and cause corrosion. If your battery so old that it's in this sort of condition, it's usually time for a new one.

By the way, is it safe to drive with the battery light on?

If your Toyota's battery warning light comes on while driving, it usually means that the alternator isn't working properly and your car is running solely on battery power. Unfortunately, when the alternator isn't working properly, it will drain your battery of all its power, leaving you stranded soon. So… if your battery light illuminates, it's best to find a safe place to pull over and seek assistance.  This is especially true at night as your headlights will drain a battery quickly.
