The gas models, which have used a V6 engine in years past, will now employ a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine. By using a turbocharged engine with four cylinders instead of a larger V6, the Highlander will maintain optimal fuel economy and offer a 17-percent increase in torque, bumping it up from the V6's 263 lb-ft to an impressive 309 lb-ft! This is especially useful when utilizing the Highlander's roomy cargo area or the seven to eight-person seating arrangement. While maintaining the same fuel efficiency as the outgoing V6 engine, the new turbocharged engine reduces CO2, NOx, and NMOG emissions. The Highlander Hybrid powertrain remains the same, using a 2.5L I-4 engine and two electric generators for an impressive 36 MPG.

Stepping inside the 2023 Toyota Highlander, you'll find a standard eight-seat layout in the L and LE trims, offering a three-seat bench for the second and third row. Meanwhile, the XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum trims come with second-row captain's chairs. However, you can choose to swap these out for a bench if you prefer. In addition to plenty of passenger space, you'll still have enough space for all your cargo as well. Behind the third row, you'll find a generous 16 cubic feet of space. However, the Limited and Platinum trims come with a 12.3-inch digital driver information display behind the steering wheel. Additionally, the available wireless charging pad has been moved from the center console storage bin to an instrument panel shelf to be more convenient. The available Connected Service Drive Connect gives drivers and passengers access to Intelligent Assistant. This allows drivers to awaken the system with simple phrases like "Hey Toyota". Then, drivers can give use voice-activated commands to adjust audio controls, change the cabin temperature, find points of interest, and search for directions.
